“The Iditarod is the famous long-distance race in which yelping dogs tow a sled across Alaska. Our Idiotarod is pretty much the same thing, except that instead of dogs, it’s people, instead of sleds, it’s shopping carts, and instead of Alaska it’s New York City.”
This smoking Ferrari red mini pick-up is a guaranteed head turner.
I bought this truck a month ago because I needed a vehicle to help with my move while I was in between cars but now I am now in need of a newer model with less miledge as I travel a lot. She is a good truck and has been kept in excellent shape by previous owners. Has about 206k miles on it. I wish I could keep her but as I said, I travel every week throughout Texas and Ok. The only negative deal is that when it starts first thing in the morning or after not have been driven for a while, it lets out a white cloud of smoke, but that does NOT effect any other engine functions. As well as moving my furnituer and city travel, I have also taken her San Antonio and she behaved. Cash. Can be easily modified into a M1 tank, cargo plane, or pirate ship. This baby won’t last long, don’t miss this smokin red-hot oppurtunity. Serious inquirys only. in process of photo shot, will send on request.
Driver 2.19 caught loading race support truck at an undisclosed testing location. Leroy Washington was also spotted at the scene sniffing the lift gate.
1972 Chrysler Newport 4 door hardtop. Car runs and drives good. AC blows cold but not hard.Body solid and straight. Good glass. Gas tank or hose above gas tank has leak. Tags and inspection out. Has been driven with auxilary gas tank. Very dependable classic. Needs new vinyl top. $700.00
1980 Chevrolet 3/4 ton dually. Was used as a welders truck. Has been sitting for a couple of years. Good 350 engine, AT, very good bed. Runs and drives good. Choke doesn’t work but runs good when warmed up. No AC. Dual gas tanks but has old gas. $850.00 OBO
The Scuderia has been hard at work. Today marked the first desert test run. A local high school band stopped by the garage to contribute the music for the web exclusive video.
How about an exhibition race for those more craftily and less mechanically inclined? Perhaps a division for cars that don’t meet the race regulations but can saunter along looking gorgeous? Or quirky?
I found these rules for the Grand Stock Class at Thunderhill Raceway. Seems like a good guideline for a Desert Racer. Minus the matching numbers part, the giving your car up for $1000 and the part about customizing the engine of course.
Weight reduction and ground clearance on the Escort are key. Weight reduction is at least free and maybe profitable depending on what can be sold for parts. Take out everything…. the seats (the rules will require a racing seat), windows, panels, flooring. The rules will require a fuel cell, so the gas tank will need to be removed. A four point roll cage will have to be installed so the cleaner the inside the better. A Fire Extinguisher will have to be mounted within reach of the driver. Extra engine parts like the A/C can go. All of the vent system can go. A lot of the dashboard can be removed. Parts can be sold to recover racing costs. Knobby tires will be a benefit. The fender wells may need to be bent out to accomodate bigger tires. Cut off the mufflers for better exhaust flow. It should sound something like this:
Or this:
I plan to do some work on the intake to improve air flow. The Scuderia will be tracking down a few oil leaks. May need some new gaskets. I’m cutting off excess weight on the vehicle and driver. We’ll be chaining the hood and trunk lid closed. The doors will be chained and welded closed.
Don’t even get me started on the paint job.

Special thanks to All Out Exotics for video of the great Tubi exhaust systems.
Alright, let’s suppose I’m on the lookout for a desert racer but know very little about cars. It’s a stretch, I know. But let’s say I find a $250 1989 Ford Escort wagon that’s in fairly decent shape all around. It runs, at least three of the doors open, and all of the windows roll down. What are the main things I need to do to transform it from clunky road warrior into full blown desert racer, without passing the $1000 limit?
Not quite $1000 Desert Racing but still good.
