Unit 11 enters the O’Reilly Outlaw Nationals
Sunday, February 11th, 2007After attending the Friday night monster truck races with Driver 2.19 and Hillbilly, Will decided to enter Unit 11 in Saturday night’s Tough Truck Competition.

It began with a mid-day master cylinder swap and some fresh paint.
We loaded it on the trailer by 3:30pm and were on our way to the Travis County Expo Center to make the 4:00pm entry deadline.
Unit 11 was the only entry from Austin making Will an overwhelming crowd favorite.

I improved air flow by cutting large holes in stock airbox. This will soon be replaced with a custom K&N-Style Fuel Injection Performance Kit.
Some would say to leave a heat barrier between the intake and the engine. I say “More Airflow!”
I’m reducing weight by removing any excess material I can find.
Inside of driver’s side door before reinforcement.
The Jeep’s rear door without the rear window washer motor. Taking it out proved a significant weight reduction. Ultimately the door will be removed.
I bolted a steel bracket to the floor to reinforce the fire extinguisher mount.

Weight reduction and ground clearance on the Escort are key. Weight reduction is at least free and maybe profitable depending on what can be sold for parts. Take out everything…. the seats (the rules will require a racing seat), windows, panels, flooring. The rules will require a fuel cell, so the gas tank will need to be removed. A four point roll cage will have to be installed so the cleaner the inside the better. A Fire Extinguisher will have to be mounted within reach of the driver. Extra engine parts like the A/C can go. All of the vent system can go. A lot of the dashboard can be removed. Parts can be sold to recover racing costs. Knobby tires will be a benefit. The fender wells may need to be bent out to accomodate bigger tires. Cut off the mufflers for better exhaust flow. It should sound something like this:

I plan to do some work on the intake to improve air flow. The Scuderia will be tracking down a few oil leaks. May need some new gaskets. I’m cutting off excess weight on the vehicle and driver. We’ll be chaining the hood and trunk lid closed. The doors will be chained and welded closed.
Don’t even get me started on the paint job.
